I'm not a good or a knowledgable RTS player, so I might be wrong in this critique and there are some layers within this gameplay that I'm not aware of. Some of what I find are the most essential gameplay improvements are not really present here, such as the good pathfinding, formation and selection of military units only when there are villagers within the select box. But it's still off putting to me that they could have made the gameplay much more in line with it's sequels, instead AOE DE feels like something that is very seperated from the rest of the series. I know I'll get used to it overtime, and I can respect the devs for remaining faithful to the source material.
Why is the tower upgrade in the granary? Why is the weapons/armor upgrades in the storage pit? And for the upgrades, the location for some of them are non sensical.
The only for me to have known this was through trial and error, or checking the wiki. There's barely any unit formation, each age unlocks new buildings, but there's no indication that in order to build this new building, you have to build this building from the previous age. Good pathfinding, unit formation, each age unlock new buildings immediately, and upgrades belong to their appropriate buildings, ex: sword upgrades belong in blacksmith.ĪOE DE has this too, but in a very different manner. Age of Mythology is one of my favorite games of all, and I spent so much time on it, so when I played AOE DE, the gameplay that I got so used to got flipped upside down.įrom AOE2 forward, the gameplay between the games was very similar to each other. My memories should have just stayed as memories, because of how much the game pissed me off. It wasn't until a few months ago that I managed to get a copy of AOE DE for a cheap price that I can re experience my childhood.īut within 15 minutes of playing the game, I came to a realization. I didn't see that coming, and seeing the sprites from my childhood turning into those beautiful models actually made me cry because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I had no hope for the series left, and decided to let the great memories live on as just memories.īut then, the reveal trailer for AOE DE was released onto Youtube.
Because of that I have a lot of nostalgia for the game, but then again, I haven't touched the original for more than 10 years, so I don't remember much else about it.īack in 2017, Age of Empires was considered to be done for, with no hope for a new entry due to its developer shutting down after Halo Wars, and it's latest release was just the HD version of AOE2 and its expansions. I remember years ago, I played the original Age of Empires on my dad's computer and having a lot of fun with it, before moving onto playing 2, Mythology then 3.
